Like her Italian sister Academy, the English version offers two types of courses. The Basic Course, lasting 6 months, is free for candidates aged between 18 and 26, as part of the Under 26 Young Talent Project supported by us, and paid for from proceeds from the Academy. The Advanced Course, lasting 12 months, is only available for a fee. The teaching of the Academy is not characterized by any usual training format or manuals, but via a learn-by-doing individualized curriculum for each candidate. Participate in both courses is necessary to pass the Admission Test, see page ' Admission'. The descriptions of both Basic and Advanced courses are shown below. Please do not purchase the courses on this page online before having taken the Admission Test. Any payments made before will be refunded immediately.
The only Docent/Mentor for all English courses is Angela Yuriko Smith, an American poet, publisher, and author. Her first collection of poetry, In Favor of Pain, was nominated for a 2017 Elgin Award. Her novella, Bitter Suites, is a 2018 Bram Stoker Awards® Finalist. In 2019 she won the SFPA's poetry contest in the dwarf form category. She has been nominated for a 2020 Pushcart Prize, and in 2021 she received from Horror Writers Association the special award 'Mentor of the Year'. She co-publishes Space and Time magazine, the oldest semi-pro publication dedicated to fantasy, horror, and science fiction, in print since 1966. More information on the Teacher / Mentor is available on the 'Teacher.' page. At the end of the study and training path foreseen by the two types of courses, both characterized by remote studies and practical exercises, each candidate who has carried out all the activities requested by the teacher will receive the Diploma of the Academy with a personal score (from 80 to 110), which will be personally delivered to candidates at the end of the course during a half-day meeting with Angela Yuriko Smith at our office in Kansas City/Independence, MO, with travel and accommodation costs (1 day) to be paid by the candidates. Some of the works written during the course, at the sole discretion and evaluation of the teacher, will be sent to our editorial sponsors, including Space and Time magazine for possible publication. |
